My Fitness Journey: An Update

2012

Since it has been close to 2 years since I began my fitness journey, I decided to update my transformation story.

My serious transformation story didn't begin for any particular reason. I wanted to begin working out. I wanted to get into better shape. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the way I looked. I always felt loved, no matter how much I weighed. My husband never criticized my weight, nor did other family or friends. I was content.

Yes, my clothes were getting tighter, and I did notice the numbers on the scale going up, but I don't remember being bothered by that fact. I thought I was keeping active enough. After all, I had a 3-year-old boy that I was keeping up with. At least, that's what I thought. Looking back at the pictures, I wonder how "active" I really thought I was.

You know the saying "calories in, calories out"-well, my calories in were quite a bit more than calories out. Ever since our son, Isaac, was born, we were told he was small, and we needed to see a dietician. Heck, from the day he was born, the nurses were forcing formula on him, because they were concerned for his health! We continued to hear it up until only a few months ago, at the age of 6.

Well, my husband and I tried to remedy Isaac's weight gain predicament by feeding him donuts, and quite a few other fattening foods over the course of about a year. No wonder I had gained so much weight-I was eating as many donuts as Isaac. I wasn't the one who had a medical condition that prevented me from gaining weight-Isaac did. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in September 2012. His body wasn't able to use all the sugar that we were feeding him. Looking back, we're saddened, because although the sugar wasn't the cause of his diabetes, it certainly wasn't doing his body any favors. If you want to read more about my son's story, you can find it in previous posts, including this one.

Since that summer, I've lost close to 40 pounds, and my husband has lost about 20. About 5 years ago, I began using Jillian Michael's at home fitness programs, but I wasn't very consistent. The habit formed, but fizzled out for various reasons. I just wasn't motivated. I moved on to other fitness programs, and then did some month-long challenges. I did a burpee challenge, and various other challenges that focused on different parts of my body, and I slowly trimmed down.

P90X & Focus T25

Sometimes I would be consistent at working out, but I still wasn't motivated. I found my motivational soul-mate workout in P90X a little over a year ago. In fact, I was so motivated by this workout and my Beachbody coach, that I signed up to coach. At first, I didn't really want to coach others, but then I thought about how many lives I could reach, and how many others I could help to live healthier lives.

Nervous about starting Focus T25

After P90X, I began Focus T25, and faithfully did the majority of the workouts at 5:30 in the morning-before my brain knew what I was doing. The workouts were good, but I missed Tony Horton (even though he is a little annoying). I also enjoyed how short the workouts were, and since I was back in school, 25 minutes was a better length of workout.

I like my short workouts

Clean Eating Support Groups

Around this time, I began hosting clean eating support groups. With these clean eating groups, I provide clean eating recipes, shopping lists formulated from the recipes, as well as providing support, tips, and advice about clean eating. These groups have helped multiple members lose an average of about 1.5 pounds per week just from eating healthier! It's exciting to see lives changed, and healthy habits established. You can learn more about these groups here. You can also check out some of my other clean eating blog posts, including this one, as well as get more healthy awesomeness at my 'like' page, Sarah's Drive, on Facebook.

P90X3

P90X3

I decided to try out P90X2, but didn't make it very far before P90X3 came out. My coach had invited me to join another challenge group with her doing either Focus T25 or P90X3, so I decided to snag P90X3 and go for it! Then, a month into the workout, our car decided to retire, and I hurt my back trying to push the car off a tow dolly. So, after a month of recovery, I jumped back into P90X3. And then, one month into Restart #2 of P90X3, my mom surprises me with the Beachbody Ultimate Reset. So, poor P90X3 was postponed for another month before I restarted it. And now, it's safe to say I will finish P90X3 this time...unless some other unforeseen event interrupts P90X3 for a third time.

Food for week 1 of the Beachbody Ultimate Reset

Beachbody Ultimate Reset

My journey through the Beachbody Ultimate Reset was a life-changing experience for me. I learned a lot about myself, and the unhealthy relationship I had with food at times. After my Reset, I feel more in control of my eating, and I think before I eat. Nowadays, weeks after finishing, I still don't drink water during most meals. Drinking water during meals dilutes stomach acid making it harder to digest.

Another tidbit I've learned, not from the Ultimate Reset, but from the research I do almost daily to become a better fitness and nutrition Beachbody coach, is that you should eat your meat first, and then your salad. This is because it's harder for your body to digest animal protein, and your stomach acids will need to work on that first, instead of being diluted with salad first. You can read about my Beachbody Ultimate Reset journey, beginning with my preparation here.

In the months leading up to my Reset, I had gained about 7 pounds, and I definitely wasn't happy about that! I didn't think I was doing anything differently, except that I was probably stressed, and sitting on my behind more than I should have been. I'd also started having some digestive issues. My mom has always had digestive issues, at least for as long as I can remember.

I mentioned the Ultimate Reset to my mom, since it's known for straightening out many of the digestive issues that can complicate our lives. I'd also told my mom about the digestive issues I was having, and how I hoped to, some day in the future, go through the Reset myself. Long story short (you can read about the long story in previous blogs), my mom bought a kit, along with one for me! My mom lost over 15 pounds, and I lost 9 (which was about 7% of my body weight).

Now

Since the completion of my Reset, I took up running again, and do that twice a week in addition to my P90X3 workouts. I recently began using the MyFitnessPal app on my phone to map my caloric intake, as well as output. My husband bought me a heart monitor for Mother's Day, so I've been mapping my calories using that. Unfortunately, that heart monitor was having a few issues, so we purchased another one, so I could continue mapping the calories burned from my workouts.

I've completed P90X3, & have since then completed the 3-Day Refresh, which is a 3-day cleanse (kinda like a mini Ultimate Reset), Chalene Johnson's PiYo (low-to-no impact, but amazing sweat with Pilates, yoga, body weight training, & flexibility), and P90X2.

Yes, I'm a free coach, and I take helping others seriously!

new heart monitor!

Day 4 of My Beachbody Ultimate Reset

Thursday

Take a 'Before' and 'After' Photos + Results = FREE T-shirt!

Today, was another good morning of being able to pretty easily get out of bed! And, I finally had my husband take my 'before' picture. These are so important! The scale can only speak numbers; it doesn't tell you if your skin has cleared up, or your tummy, butt, or arm fat has slimmed out a bit. Also, and I didn't realize this until a day or 2 before I started my Reset that I will get a free T-shirt for finishing this program, too! If you own a Beachbody fitness program, you can enter the Beachbody challenge, and submit your 'before' and 'after' photos, and results on TeamBeachbody.com for a chance to win money, and you will get a free T-shirt. I enjoy wearing my P90X and Focus T25 shirts, and am looking forward to wear an Ultimate Reset one, as well!

"Before" the Beachbody Ultimate Reset
Breakfast

For breakfast this morning, I had a fresh fruit platter consisting of cantaloupe, honeydew melon, kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. I also ate 3/4 cup of plain low-fat yogurt sweetened with 1/2 tsp. maple syrup! It was a delicious breakfast, but it only filled me up for about 1 1/2 hours. If you have been working out quite a bit prior to starting, like I had been, then you'll have more muscle to burn calories. It takes a little while, but my stomach is adjusting to the reduced calories. (I promise, as I'm writing this when I'm actually on Day 9 ;) your will power will get stronger!!!)

Snacking

The best thing I've done, and the guide recommends, is to drink water when you begin to feel hungry. Also, if you feel like you need a snack before dinner, wait at least 2 hours after you eat lunch, drink water, and if you are still hungry, they have a list of recommended snacks for each week. I also set alarms for myself, especially around the time I can have a snack. Then I gauge what will be going on before dinner, such as if an activity will delay my dinner, and if I feel like eating as late as a snack would cause me to eat. The guide recommends waiting 2 hours after you eat a snack before you can  eat dinner. I had to have a snack before lunch today, because I was studying hard for an exam, and couldn't concentrate without brain food!

Because of the hectic day I had yesterday with meal planning, I had the majority of my lunch and dinner already ready for today! I recommend reading through the directions for each recipe, since some of the require anywhere from only a few minutes to overnight for cooking or marinating. I'm hoping that today will be a time to relax after my exam is finished!

Lunch

I tried making the Nori rolls, and they are disgusting, nor would they stick right! It's like a seaweed sushi roll with tempeh...I hate tempeh, and can't get over the smell (although, later, I did find the Baked Tempeh dish from Day7 to be quite tastey!)! I've had tempeh before, when I was doing the fitness program Focus T25 and following it's nutrition guide, but I couldn't remember how it was supposed to look. I almost threw away an entire slab of tempeh, because it looked like it had mold growing, but it's not mold (I compared it with an unopened package, to make sure). I ate about half of the Nori roll like a hot dog, and then threw the rest away. The dish that went with the Nori roll also wasn't that great: lentil-lime salad. The flavor was really overwhelming, and I only ate a few bites, and saved the rest for later.

Dinner

I had the stir-fried veggies (you can read about my first time having them, and see the picture here) again tonight, and I loved it! They were cooked in coconut oil, which I'd never used before I started the Reset. It is so delicious smelling and tasting. It also leaves my lips feeling soft. I will be making this stir-fry a lot when I'm finished with my Reset! In a large skillet, on medium-high, heat sesame and coconut oil, then add carrots for a few minutes, then add broccoli for about 5 minutes, add the red pepper and zucchini last. Stirring constantly, so nothing burns. Tonight, I decided to leave off the Nori Gomasio, and instead, opted to eat a whole tablespoon of it! It wasn't the most pleasant experience, but it gave me some good vitamins, I'm sure :)

Temptation

My son requested to watch Willy Wonka today, which was a little painful, especially when Willy Wonka starts shoving an entire chocolate bar into his mouth. It didn't help that it was the part of the movie where they're in the room where you can eat just about everything! I wanted some chocolate!!! Now, my son is talking about his class's Valentine's Day party that I helped out with, and how we had donuts, and now I want donuts! Then, he said, politely: "but you're not going to be having any, until the end of your challenge." I will get through this!!!

I would love to give you the support you want to achieve your goals! Let me know how I can help!

Fewer Excuses, More Results

Clean Eating

Yes, you can get good weight loss results simply by changing your eating habits; sticking to an 80/20 clean eating diet (not diet, as in calorie-counting, starving, guilt-ridden dieting). I've seen it over, and over, and over again. In fact, over 80 pounds have been lost  gotten rid of by 18 members in just 30 days of clean eating! If you want to know what an 80/20 clean eating diet is, it's 80% clean eating (check out another one of my blog posts to see what I mean by clean eating), and 20% of just about whatever you want. The 'whatever you want' could be during those holidays, birthday parties, or unexpected moments that call for a fast food trip, or a sweet treat fix.

Functional Fitness

Clean eating is a very valuable part to weight loss, and I do contribute the majority of the weight-loss from my clean eating groups and their healthier eating, some of the members incorporate exercise into their daily routine, as well. I'm a big proponent of exercise, because you can eat well and live well, but I want to eat well and live strong! I want to be fit, not thin. I desire ab definition, and a toned body. I believe in the importance of not only cardio, but weight-training (so you burn more calories), flexibility (so you don't strain your muscles and tendons), and balance (so you're less likely to fall, as you get older)! I love that Tony Horton (creator of P90X, P90X2, P90X3) stresses the importance of functional fitness, especially as we age (Tony's pushing 60, and he looks 40). You can choose to work for hours at the gym, hoping that you cover all the muscle groups and important aspects of fitness. OR you can snag a fitness program, without the hassle of a contract, monthly payments, traffic to get to the gym, daycare, old equipment, confusing equipment, scheduling, etc.

Fewer Excuses, More Results

What are you focusing on to get ready for Spring Break or warmer weather?
I'm on day 33 of P90X3, and I have decided on this motto: "Fewer Excuses, More Results." You can learn more about my journey, and see my results here, at a previous blog post! I'm not perfect; I still miss a work out here or there, but I haven't given up! Yes, it's hard. No, it doesn't get easier; you just get stronger. Are you ready to see how strong you can become? Think about the goals you want to achieve, and start today! One of my goals, after finishing P90X3, is to get certified to teach P90X before the end of the year! This time, last year, I had only heard of P90X, and never imagined completing it! Imagine where YOU could be this time next year!

Now, what's stopping you?

How do you want to get started?

Do you want some help?

I'd love to prove it to you that I want to help you reach your goals! I host free clean eating support groups on Facebook, where I'll give you 30 days of clean eats recipes, shopping lists, and clean eating tips. Also, if you want to get started with a fitness program that will work for you, I will help you get started right! www.beachbodycoach.com/iib4

P90X & Team Beachbody, Another "Family"

P90X & Team Beachbody, Another "Family"

The Beachbody Challenge

In April 2013, I saw a post that a gal from the women's group at church had posted in our group on Facebook. She had announced her upcoming fitness challenge group, and invited us to join her to work out for 60 days. I got curious, so I sent her a message asking for more information. She sent me a video with more information about the challenge, which happened to be the Beachbody Challenge. The Beachbody Challenge calls for the participant to use a Beachbody fitness program, such as, for example, P90X, Insanity, or Brazil Butt Lift. The participant enters his/her statistics, which include beginning and ending weight and measurements, and a before and after photo in order to receive a free T-shirt, and get entered for a chance to win cash prizes. I got excited, but wasn't sure if I was ready to commit. But, my husband gave me the go-ahead to pick out a challenge pack, and let the gal who had contacted me, and who also turned out to be a Beachbody coach, know that I wanted to join her challenge group. Then, the only challenge before the actual fitness challenge began, was to decide which fitness program I wanted to do.

I'd heard of P90X, Insanity, and Brazil Butt Lift, but had never pictured myself using any of these fitness programs. I'd seen the infomercials, but had never had another thought about them. In the past, I'd purchased a few Jillian Michaels's work out programs, and I'd done some other random work out routines, such as running (or trying to) at least once per week, and other little monthly fitness "challenges" that my husband's cousin had hosted. We'd done 30 days of burpees, where we ended with doing 100 burpees! We also did challenges that incorporated a variety of moves to tone different areas, but none of them really did enough. I knew, and my husband assured me, that I could be consistent with a Beachbody program, because I was already motivated with his cousin's "challenges" I'd been involved in for the previous couple of months.

P90X

It was hard for me to decide on a fitness program for the Beachbody challenge, and I'm kinda a tight wad when it comes to spending, especially when I buy things for myself! My husband told me that if I couldn't decide, then he would decide for me (because he planned on using the program eventually, and I wanted his input, too). Well, I wasn't able to decide, so he picked P90X, and we went ahead and ordered the challenge pack. When the challenge pack was delivered, I still had a few days before the challenge was to begin. I was excited and nervous all at the same time! I wasn't sure what to expect, and was curious to see if I would be able to make it through any of the moves. After all, P90X is known for how intense it is. The program incorporates muscle confusion, including pull-ups, push-ups, yoga, and plyometrics, to name a few.

When the day the challenge was to begin arrived, I was ready! I took my before photos, weighed myself and set a goal weight, and set up my work out schedule via my Team Beachbody account. I checked in with my fitness challenge group and my coach via our private Facebook group. Having someone to be accountable to, and to talk about my struggles and my successes helped me so much! It gave me the motivation to keep working out, and drinking my Shakeology almost every day. The first few times I drank Shakeology, I didn't like it, I have to admit! I had gotten the Tropical Strawberry flavor, which I have actually now grown to love, and I had mixed it with soy milk. I talked to my coach, and she recommended I try it with almond milk, almond butter, and a dash of maple syrup. This combination of ingredients was actually one of the recipes that was on the calendar I received with my Shakeology, but, remember, I'm a tight wad, and didn't want to purchase extra ingredients before I actually ran out of perfectly usable ingredients! I did try the combination that my coach recommended, and it was delicious! Now days, I usually blend Tropical Strawberry with about 20 ounces of water, a banana, a scoop of peanut butter, and a tablespoon of chia seeds.

Team Beachbody Coach

About a month after I'd purchased my challenge pack, my coach sent me a message about the coaching opportunity. I was hesitant, at first, but it sounded interesting. I watched the video about coaching that she sent me, and I got excited about the possibilities! The coach speaking in the video told her story about how she became a coach, and even though she lived in a small town, and was not a very social person, within a year she was making thousands of dollars a month just being a Beachbody coach! Since then, I've heard of numerous stories about coaches, some that I know personally, who have been able to quit their jobs to become full-time coaches. The main reason for success as a Beachbody coach is the amount of people you build trust with, guide, motivate, hold accountable, and inspire to change their lives, and take their health into their hands. We want to know about goals, and what others are doing for their health, and desire to help them achieve success! It's taken months of hard work to "work the business," as we call it, but it's worth it to see lives changed!

My Transformation Story

About two months into P90X, which was the end of my challenge group with my coach, and about a month after becoming a coach myself, I began to map out my transformation story. I wanted to show others what fitness, nutrition, and Beachbody had done for me. I sorted through the pictures from our camera and cam across some pictures from summer 2012. Have you ever had one of those moments that become a sort of wake up call? I had one of those moments while looking at those pictures! I began thinking about what my weight had been during that summer, and realized that I had weighed, on average, about 150 pounds. I have never really struggled with my weight, nor had I felt large at the time, even though I now know that I was the largest I'd been in my life, and even close to the same weight I was while pregnant with my son! I'd had my son four years prior to that summer, so he wasn't the cause for my weight. I look back, and realize that the working out that I'd been doing prior to that summer weren't doing enough, and I probably wasn't eating very well, either. 150 pounds may not seem large to you, but for someone who is only five foot, two inches, I was overweight. My husband never said a thing about my weight during that summer, but when we both saw my picture, we uttered the word "chubby."

I know that weight and outward appearances do not define who a person is, but I also know that with extra weight, and unhealthy eating habits, I wasn't who I wanted to be. I also didn't have enough energy to keep up with the things that I needed to be doing; the responsibilities of a wife, a mother, and a student. I remember constantly taking naps, having back aches, constipation, and frequent migraines. I didn't realize that my weight was probably the culprit for my ailments, until I looked at that picture, then compared it to how I looked after P90X, and now over a year and a half later. Since that summer, I am down four pant sizes, and I have lost more than forty pounds. With P90X, I lost over 9 inches over my body, and lost over fifteen pounds. After P90X, I decided to try out Focus T25, which had just come out around the time I finished P90X. I've since then completed Focus T25, and started P90X2, but have now included the new P90X3 into my workout routine.

Summer 2012 vs Summer 2013

Team Beachbody, Another "Family"

Since becoming a coach, I've found a wonderful passion, not only in working out and creating a healthier lifestyle for my family, but also in helping others realize how important their health is, too! The other coaches I work with desire to help others so much, including helping fellow Beachbody coaches, that recently I've come to know some of them as family. My coach has especially been someone I've grown close to. She has motivated me to keep striving and to keep being consistent. She has encouraged me to set goals that are big and scary, but she has always helped me to acquire the tools that I need to be able to achieve those goals! She has prepared me with the tools not only to grow my business, but to grow my self. Other coaches have inspired me to work harder, and smarter, by providing me with tools and tips that they have found success with, but they have also inspired me with their own personal achievements. We share our goals and our successes. We also share our struggles and downfalls, which has helped us to grow as coaches and individuals as we offer encouragement and support to each other.

It has taken a good deal of mistakes, hard work, and disappointments to get to where I am today as an emerald Beachbody coach, but it has been worth it! I love sharing about what Beachbody has done for me and my family, and learning about what it has done for others. I don't have an awesome body (yet), nor do I have the most disciplined work out routine, or nutrition regime, but Shakeology provides me my healthiest meal, and I feel so much better than before I was sent that message by my coach, and before I began my first fitness challenge. I love to hear about the goals that others set, and strive to motivate them to map out a plan that will get them to success! This month, I began the first free clean eating challenge that I'm hosting on my own. The previous challenges that I've hosted, I've co-hosted with my coach, so the clean eating challenge is a new adventure! I have plans for hosting another one next month, as well as a Beachbody challenge. These groups and the members are so awesome and unique; as I learn about each member, their goals, and what I can learn from them to become a better coach!

I would love to hear your story! What goals do you have? And how can we work together to get you to your goals?
