Day 12 of My Beachbody Ultimate Reset

Friday

Breakfast

I had another delicious fruit  bowl again for breakfast. I recommend, as the guide does as well, variety in the fruit you have. I love fruit, but I don't want to be bored! By the third week, I'll be having a fruit bowl every morning, if you see my dilemma. I was also reading in the guide about the weeks following the Beachbody Ultimate Reset, and the steps to take. I'll be having fruit for another week following the Reset, as well!

Lunch

Lunch was the hearty vegetable miso soup and a microgreen salad. It was a beautiful day outside, so I ate outside until my son decided it was too warm, and time for use to go back inside.

I had a snack of snap peas, carrots, and cauliflower with dressing. After that, which I also ate outside, I spent time prepping our garden pots. It was a good distraction, along with the laundry my son helped me fold and put away.

I got a little discouraged today when I was reading about what to expect the 4 weeks following the Reset. I won't be back to my normal routine, not even yogurt or eggs from weeks 1 and 2, for a few weeks. Then, the 4th week following the Reset, I can begin to reintroduce meat.

I'm not an alcoholic, but I do like a drink every now and then, but that's another thing I will be waiting a few weeks for, as well. I really wasn't living an unhealthy lifestyle prior to my Reset, nor did we eat out often or eat a lot of junk food, but I do enjoy pizza, donuts, and a vodka cranberry every now and then.

I'm definitely not complaining out the cleanse, because so many dishes have been amazing, and I plan on continuing to make many of them after the Reset! Also, the way my body is changing for the good, has made this Reset so worth it!

What Fruit Should You Have?

I do regret buying the fruit I bought earlier today, when I said I wanted variety. I bought mango, bananas, and pineapple. I regret this purchase, because when I finished watching the DVDs that came with the program, it isn't recommended to incorporate those fruits into the program. They are higher on the glycemic index, so they are broken down into glucose much quicker than lower glycemic fruits like pears, plums, peaches, or apples.

Dinner

Dinner was Mediterranean Beets, coconut collard greens, and millet. It was fairly delicious. I believe I was trying to prepare too many dishes at once, and got some things crispier than others. When they say 'don't let the millet burn,' you should realize that it will quickly burn if you really aren't stirring frequently, and adding water when you should.

Day 11 of My Beachbody Ultimate Reset

Thursday
What do you consider half way through 21 days?

Breakfast

I still feel refreshed, regardless of the restless night, although I am pretty hungry. I'm really glad I opted to make my breakfast fruit plate into a fruit salad (fruit cut up and mixed together in a bowl) last night. Now, I'm waiting a few more minutes before it's time to eat.

Today, I'll be shopping for some more ingredients. Also, I weighed myself this morning, since I'm halfway through my Reset. I'm down 4.5 lbs in 10 days!!! That's about 0.45 lb loss per day! My body is getting rid of the extra baggage, for sure!

Lunch

I'm all prepped for lunch! I'm having quinoa-lentil salad and cucumber-tomato salad with avocado. I cut the dressing part of the recipes in half, as it is pretty strong. One thing I continue to do is annotate next to the recipes about how I feel about certain recipes, especially if I need to change quantities. I also make sure to read if a meal only calls for half of a recipe serving, or if that recipe is going to be used the next day (then I get a chance to cut my prep time by making double, and the amount of ingredients I use versus waste if I accidentally make too much).

This morning, I noticed my spinach was getting droopy, so I snipped the ends and put it in water. I've been doing this with herbs too. It makes produce last quite a bit longer.

Dinner

Unfortunately, my peppy attitude from this morning is gone. Dinner was ok, although I still hate wakame seaweed, and I'm not used to miso paste yet, because I think it leaves the soup tasting weird. The Swiss chard was ok, as was the quinoa. I'm just in a crabby mood. Darn life changes. At least I know things will get easier, as my body adapts and improves!

If you are interested in learning more about the Beachbody Ultimate Reset, and use a few of the recipes, May 7 I will be hosting a free and private week-long support group on Facebook. Comment below, or send me a Friend Request on Facebook, and you'll be added to the group! The Ultimate Reset did wonders for not only my body, but my mind, as I took back control of my eating habits!

About Half way through my Beachbody Ultimate Reset

Day 10, Wednesday

Breakfast

Fresh fruit plate for breakfast with kiwi, honeydew melon, raspberries, half a banana, and a kind of mango that I've never had before. It was a bit smaller than a regular mango. I sprinkled cinnamon, which made breakfast even more delicious! (Here is where I tell you that I haven't entirely watched the DVDs that came with the program. If I would have already, I would have learned that banana and mango are not recommended for the Beachbody Ultimate Reset, because they are higher on the glycemic index. This means that they are converted to glucose more quickly, and therefore cause a quick, high blood sugar spike. This is not very healthy for the body. The guide gives recommendations for lower glycemic fruits, such as peaches, pears, and apples, but you can also look up 'glycemic index' on the internet to find a more extensive list).

I had a quick snack of pitted dates (another mistake, since these are high glycemic, as well), and a few apple slice before I ran to class. It's definitely nice to have pre prepared snacks in case of emergencies. The guide talks about meals that are easier, and take less time, to prepare for various reasons. After all, the Reset has many new recipes, some of which take quite a bit more preparation than others.

It is recommended that the Reset be done at a time in your life where you are able to commit to following the program verbatim. This ensures that you get the best results, and aren't hindered by extra stresses, such as travel where you aren't able to prepare more complex meals. I am practically washing dishes after every other meal, since I go through the majority of our measuring utensils. And that's saying a lot, since we have about 3 sets of both measuring cups and spoons! It's also nice to have some good quality skillets. We recently picked up some aluminum ones at Costco, and they are so easy to clean!

Lunch

I can't get over how filling the sweet potato and roasted red pepper bisque is! I had it for lunch, in addition to an entire Greek salad of romaine lettuce, a whole cucumber, a medium tomato, and 5 kalamata olives. It was delicious! I wasn't a fan of tomatoes before the Reset, but after eating them quite often, I'm able to tolerate them.

I didn't have a snack this afternoon (which was ok, since I had a snack earlier). Also, my lunch was late, and I didn't finish eating until 1:30, so I wasn't starving when dinner came.

Sweet potato and Roasted red pepper bisque

Dinner

The quinoa-lentil salad and steamed broccoli were yummy for dinner. I made a double batch of the salad, since I'll be having it again tomorrow. It definitely saves on time to look ahead for the next days meal, and see if you can cut preparation time by doubling some recipes.

I went to bed hungry, and was actually hungry a few hours before, so I had a cup of white tea, which helped a little. White tea has one of the lowest caffeine contents. When you look for teas, look for 'caffeine-free,' not 'decaffeinated.' 'Decaffeinated' teas have usually gone through a chemical process to remove the majority of the caffeine, while caffeine-free tea has not gone through a chemical process.

By this point, I've already lost 4 1/2 lbs, and I am stoked!!!

Day 5 of My Beachbody Ultimate Reset

Friday

Today, I had my first migraine since I started my Beachbody Ultimate Reset. They can be caused by stress (both good and bad stress). Starting a new endeavor, such as the Reset, can be stressful, so it's no surprise that I got the migraine. Also, the fact that I made it to the weekend without killing anyone, may have caused some elation, and, in turn, good stress. I took some ibuprofen and drank some more water.

In other news, this may not be new news to you, but I haven't been doing this for long: since there is so much fresh produce required for my Reset, I've taken to snipping the ends of leafy produce, as well as green onions, celery, and asparagus, and sticking them in a glass of water like a bouquet of flowers. This usually plumps them right back up!

All my food during the day, including breakfast farina with walnuts, green apples, and a whole tablespoon of maple syrup deserves an A+ for deliciousness!

For lunch, I had zucchini cashew soup, and while the water was heating up to prepare to make the soup, I was eating my veggie plate with my delicious homemade hummus. A few hours later, I had a banana-peanut butter Tropical Strawberry Shakeology shake for my snack. I was so used to drinking Shakeology everyday before my Reset, and I miss it a little now. It's nice that I can have it for a snack!

For dinner tonight, I had Southwestern Veggie Taco. It was delicious!!! This will definitely be a recipe I will be using after my Reset.

How I'm Preparing For My Spring Reset

Beginning the Beachbody Ultimate Reset on March 31, 2014

I've talked about the Beachbody Ultimate Reset in past blogs, and about my desire to do it. A few weeks ago, I'd mentioned the Reset to my mom, when she spoke of having digestion problems. I'd also mentioned my desire to do the Reset in the future. Then, earlier this week, we went to visit my parents, and I found out that my mom had gotten both of us the Beachbody Ultimate Reset! I was stunned, and feel very spoiled. So, starting this coming Monday, March 31, 2014, my mom and I will be beginning Phase 1 of the Reset, Reclaim.

A Few Days in Advance

After I found out how badly my mom spoiled me, we began planning out how we would need to prepare for the coming 21 days. My mom and I made lists of the items we would need, and ordering some of the supplies from the Internet (which is one suggestion that Beachbody offers for those living in small towns, such as my mom's home of about 3, 300 people, and 2 grocery stores). We talked about how we would slowly wean ourselves off of coffee, since it is highly suggested that you don't drink caffeine during the Reset, because the Reset is about detoxing, not about adding more toxins. My mom and I also talked about keeping in contact every day, or at least every other day to talk about how we are doing. Because the Beachbody Ultimate Reset is such a life-changing experience, joining a support team, or finding support in family or friends, is recommended to ensure that needed support is available when temptation or other tough times arise.

On our way back home, my husband, son, and I went to an Asian Food Market to pick up a few of the items that we weren't able to find easily at a regular grocery store. While at the market, we browsed for various items, and came out with miso paste, which I'll be using to make Miso Soup & Ginger-Sesame-Miso Dressing. We also picked up a bamboo rolling map, which I'll be using to make Nori Rolls. The other items we found were nori seaweed, wakame seaweed, Mirin Japanese cooking wine, and a Kabocha squash. I realized after we were miles away, that the cooking wine contained corn syrup, which was one of the things that is recommended to make sure the cooking wine doesn't have. Thankfully, though, I was able to find some at Fred Meyer in the Asian cooking section, that doesn't have corn syrup in it. About the Kabocha squash, it's a product of Mexico, so I thought it might be found at a regular grocery store, but I didn't see it at Fred Meyer. I will look at Winco, but if I can't find it, and have to use it beyond the one I have, the Reset suggests substituting it with acorn squash (which is easier to find).

Sunday, the Day Before It Begins

Since quite a bit of the Beachbody Ultimate Reset consists of eating whole fruits and vegetables, I will be waiting until Sunday, the Day Before It Begins, to purchase the produce I'll need for the first 6 days. I will also be preparing some of the foods ahead of time. I'll be making brown rice, quinoa, various dressings, toasted pumpkin seeds, black beans, and lentils, as well as something called Nori Gomasio. I'm nervous, but also really excited, about starting on Monday!

Spring Cleaning with the Beachbody Ultimate Reset

Spring Cleaning Detoxing

Earlier in the month I talked about detoxing, & the reasons that you might do a good cleansing. The human body has a way of adapting to what we eat & what we do to/for it. That's probably why a lot of people are able to eat processed foods much of their lives & still be able to function. But, why settle w/ merely functioning in life? I want to live life to the fullest! I want to be around for my grand kids & great grand kids! I want to travel the world! What is your health worth to you?

If you feel like you are struggling in life; struggling w/ your health, perhaps what you have been eating (& what is possibly still lurking from your past food intake) is affecting you more than you think! Recently, in my cell biology class, we learned about how diet & exercise can affect our body on a microscopic level! The foods that we eat can affect the bacteria in our body, which can affect our mood, diseases we may contract, and many other aspects. Exercise can actually affect the folding of proteins, that can, in turn, affect your risk for diabetes & cancer. For exercise, I am currently doing P90X3, and aim to work out every day until I'm finished with the 90-day program.

Clean eating is an awesome first step toward taking your health back, but sometimes our body needs an extra assist in the cleaning out department. Recently, I've reached a plateau in my weight loss, &I know that I haven't been taking care of my body the way I should be. My back injury put me off a bit, & I've also been getting more migraines lately, as well. I know many people who have had success with the Beachbody Ultimate Reset, so, in the near future I hope to renew my health. This month, March 2014, Beachbody's Ultimate Reset challenge pack is on sale!

Day 2 of Clean Eating Challenge

8 Reasons to Detox

Today, I want to talk a little about detoxing your body. Previously, you may not have thought much about what you were eating. After all, a lot of what is available in the store or at fast food restaurants is generally toxic to your body. All the more reason to do a detox cleanse. You can find detox drink recipes available online, and below I've included a simple cranberry detox drink. There is a lot of variety available depending on how in depth you want to cleanse. Some detoxes last for weeks, for example Beachbody's Ultimate Reset, while others only last a few days.

The need for detoxing shows why, more and more lately, especially in other countries, a lot of products are being banned. There are, however, toxins that naturally occur in organic produce, as well. Below are a few of the unnatural things to avoid in the food that you buy and eat, and reasons you may consider detoxing for.

1. Artificial food dye: which are found in so many things! Even if you don't think it'd be in something (like ready-to-make biscuits), I'd rather be safe then sorry! It can inhibit nerve-cell development.

2. Brominated vegetable oil: Makes food dye stick to liquid, but also may cause birth defects and major organ damage. You find this in sports drinks and soda pop.

3. Potassium bromate (or bromated flour): Affects your kidneys and nervous system. Found in commercial breads and baked goods.

4. Azodicarbonamide: Bleaches flour, plastic, and can be found in breads, frozen dinners, boxed pasta mixes, and packaged baked goods. It can cause an asthma attack.

5. BHA & BHT: Waxy preservatives linked to cancer and tumors. Found in cereal, nut mixes, gum, butter, meat, dehydrated potatoes.

6. Synthetic growth hormones rBGH and rBST: Harmful to cows and linked to increasing tumor development in humans. You can find it in dairy products.

7. Arsenic: which can be laced in chicken!

8. Farm-raised salmon: they're full of antibiotics!

I know cleaning up my own, and my family's, diet has done wonders for how we feel! It takes time to completely feel better, but you will begin to notice almost right away when you start cleaning up your diet! It's as though your body is sending you a 'thank you'!

Here is a cranberry detox water that you can get started with. There is another way to detox with cranberry juice, which involves apple pectin, and psyllium fiber, as well as dandelion leaf (you can look this one up on the web). Cranberry juice on it's own is great for it's antioxidants and anti-cancer properties.

Cranberry H2O

Drink between each meal.
Mix 8 oz. unsweetened cranberry juice, or 3 Tbsp. concentrate, with 56 oz. plain water (or 64 oz. if using cranberry concentrate).
